Oxfordshire Lido Scoops Gold in Annual Swimtastic
Awards
Sarah Watson, Rebecca Cook,
Craig Figes
Chipping Norton Lido scooped “Gold”
as Community Project Award winner in the Swimtastic
Awards 2007 at an awards ceremony in Stratford-Upon-Avon.
The award, part of national awards organised by the
Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) and backed by cereal
manufacturer Kellogg’s, aims to acknowledge and
celebrate pool-based projects in the UK that have benefited
their communities the most.
David Cameron MP, who is Patron of The Lido said “
I am delighted. Chipping Norton Lido is one of the country’s
few remaining open air pools. It was saved from closure
by local campaigners four years ago and, since then
has played an increasingly important role in the sporting
and recreational life of the community. This is a fantastic
achievement.”
Fellow Trustee Sarah Watson had this to say on winning
the award, “Obviously we are delighted to receive
this level of national recognition in what is only our
third season of independent operation. As a charity
and a social enterprise, The Lido can truly be described
as a pool with a social conscience. We are passionate
about ensuring that all areas of the community benefit
from a regular swim, and we hope our work with young
people demonstrates just that.”
Bruce Learner, Community and Social Responsibility
Manager at Kellogg’s said: “It’s fundamental
to a healthy lifestyle to eat a balanced diet as well
as get the right amount of exercise. While Kellogg’s
can help kick-start the day with a nutritious breakfast,
it’s also important to work hard in encouraging
people to also get active. These awards are all about
people who do just that and we congratulate everyone
at Chipping Norton Lido on their amazing achievements!”
The Community Project Award is one of ten in the Swimtastic
Awards. The Lido was nominated for the Community Project
Award on the strength of its work with young people
in 2007. Projects aimed at young people included Dip
‘n Chill evenings for 11 – 18 year olds,
top-up swimming lessons and mentoring for 10 and 11
year olds, a lunchtime swim club for local school children,
and a junior lifeguard training programme.
Our
Patron, the Rt Hon David Cameron MP visited
the sparkling new Lido facilities on 25 May, 2007. He
unveiled the ‘Roll of Honour’ display with
names of people who have donated to the Capital Appeal
which he helped launch last year. He then had a tour
to see the improvements for himself, before settling
down for a tea party on the lawns.
